Hello Garg,
You should have given the image of the greenish
flowers too! I was foxed for a while as i am not familiar with the latin names. It was a very common avenue tree in Ahmedabad. The sweet smell is so pleasing and unmistakable to recognise.Well i dont know the position there at present. But in Mumbai you come across some once a while.Similiar looking but with pink flowers are common sight over here with its umbrella crown--known as the Rain tree.Family is also altogether different-Samanea saman. We also call it siris.
REgards,
Bindu

Thanks, Bindu ji. I din't have flower pictures i.e. why didn't post one.
Samanea saman is also known as Vilaiti Siris just to differentiate from Albizia lebbeck, more commonly called Siris. Here in Kolkata we have more of Samanea saman (Vilaiti Siris) than Albizia lebbeck (Siris), which I think is more common in North & makes pleasing sound when its dried pods without leaves stir with the wind.

I have a picture of Albizzia lebbeck with a dry pod.
A large number of trees were spotted on the roadside from Chennai to Pondechari.
The number is eroding fast here around Pune.

Gargji,
There are also two other species of Albizia A. procera (safed siris) and Albizia amara. Well the sound of pods are sweet to u. But it gains its name as M-I-L's tongue for this sound.
