Hello everyone,
This is hemanth... i am botany post grad from Mumbau...passionate
about plants, plant ecology and plant evolution.
I recently joined this wonerful group.

Even i think, the plants is Tibouchina, and there is only one species
around westernghats and that is T. semidecandra.
The flowers of Melastoma are i think more pinkish..and leaves show
proper convergent venation.

This species is common in areas like Madurai and Nilgiri. It inhabits
low lying flat plains.

Regards,
Hemanth

Dear Rahul

It defintiely seems to belong to Genus Tibouchina .
I would like second with Hemanth's identification.

In nilgiris one can find only one species belonging to this genera. It is Tibouchina semidecandra
Family: Melastomaceae

The other genera from this group Osbeckia and Melastoma have pinkish flowers.

Convergence of the veins in the leaves is one of the important characters of this group.

Tibouchina urvilleana (syn Pleroma grandiflora, T. semidecandra) from Brazil.

This species is at its best where summers are cool. It excels in cool coastal California, USA, but performs poorly in warm humid subtropical Florida, USA.
