Neil--

Is this a weed plant for you locally?

Pretty, but obnoxious if you must remove large patches...

Regards--
Ken.

Affirmitive Ken. It is an invasive weed in wastelands, along river banks and even in cultivated fields.
             Regards,
               Neil.

Argemone mexicana has naturalised long time back and is competitive with the indigenous flora around areas which get periodically waterlogged. It is found on rubbish dumps too.
Local people esp around western Maharashtra know that it is poisonous but its latex is used to cure eye diseases by traditional healers.

Its seeds are used to adulterate mustard. a few years back a lot of mustard oil thus adulterated was recovered in Delhi, causing scare all around.
