sending 2 pics. of Corypha elata from Andaman taken on 9th Feb. 2007. 1) the plant 2) the dying plant after flowering- the plant flowers only once after 50-60 years, and dies after flowering. Another speies C. umbricaulifera grows in S. India and Sri Lanka. C.elata specimens can be found in the Sibpur Garden. One species was reported wild in Bengal- C. taliera, this is reported to be extinct now. The last documented specimen of C. taliera was from Raj Bhavan in 1943. Some solitary specimens have been reported in the news paper now and then from Asansol, Birbhum,Burdwan. The last one shown in the TV news (ETV-Bangla) about a year back from S. 24 pgs, which was reported to be worshipped by people as Sage Plant with flock of hairs on head, as no body in the vill. had seen the plants in flowering earlier.
