Dear Kannada-knowing friends,

Is malkalli = ಮಾಲಿಕಳ್ಳಿ OR ಮಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ OR yet else ?

Are ಗೊಟಕಳ್ಳಿ gotakalli OR ಗೊಟಗಳ್ಳಿ gotagalli ... valid names for Euphorbia neriifolia ?

Dear Dinesh ji,

 

Went through the pdf you have attached.

 

For Euphorbia neriifolia, Kannada name given here is  "Malekalli", which can be written as ಮಾಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ.

And there is NO name as ಗೊಟಕಳ್ಳಿ ( gotakalli ) OR ಗೊಟಗಳ್ಳಿ ( gotagalli ) for the same, in Western Karnataka, at least.

I made typos in Kannada names as well as English transcribed names ...

They should be ಗೂಟಕಳ್ಳಿ (gutakalli) OR ಗೂಟಗಳ್ಳಿ (gutagalli).

gutakalli is a name (also) for another species of Euphorbia at ENVIS / FRLHT (Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham.)

... There is one interesting thing in the nomenclature.

 

Euphorbia neriifolia L. and Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. are surely distict two species.

 

But there is one Euphorbia neriifolia Roxb. [notice the change in authority] which is a SYNONYM of Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham.

 

So, name "Malekalli", (ಮಾಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ) you can assign for Euphorbia neriifolia L.

And ಗೂಟಕಳ್ಳಿ (gutakalli) OR ಗೂಟಗಳ್ಳಿ (gutagalli) for Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. (Synonym Euphorbia neriifolia Roxb )

 

I believe, the plant authorities are not mere suffix, but decides the Authenticity of the plant material.
