Nestled on the outer spur of Sahyadri (Western Ghats), Matheran is nature lover`s paradise. This evergreen forest, near Mumbai, is one of the rich bio-diversity spot. Monsoon brings additional diffusion of floral and faunal life on this hill station. In terms of guaranteed sightings, nothing could be promised, in this rainy season. But, presence of Indian Giant Squirrel, Common Langoor, Green Vine Snake, Bamboo Pit Viper, White Cheeked Barbet, Orange Headed Thrush, White Rumped Shama, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Red Whiskered Bulbul, Blue Oakleaf, Malabar Spotted Flat, Blue Mormon, Yamfly, Monkey puzzle, Grass Demon, Chestnut Bob and several floral species (Endemic to the Sahyadri & Konkan) have been observed and recorded here.
To witness the rich flora and fauna of this hill station, a nature trail is organised and scheduled on Sunday 21st August, 2011. The trail is actually a down-trek expedition, literally 12-15 Kms of walk on Matheran-Neral toy train route. The trail is self observe and self identify oriented programme. Participants would have to bring their own supply of food and water suffieceint enough for good 10 hours. Wear camouflaged, full sleeves T-shirt/Shirt and trouser (no three-forths or short pyjama) with good gripped trekking shoe.
No trek fee, but to bear your own expenses, likely to be less than 200 Rs. But don’t forget to carry rain cover (for you and your camera/rucksack), mosquito repellent and umbrella. Those willing to take bath, under the water fall, can bring their swim shorts and towel. The bath, under the waterfall, would be only permitted during the breaks and in isolation from the rest of group. Smoking during the trail would be deemed as an offence.
The event is open to all (based on the number of participant, could be divided in groups) and all are invited. Do forward it to anyone, whom you feel, has liking of WILD WORLD. But, RSVP on facebook event is must. Schedule of the trail :-
