Dear Garg ji,

Some characters in photos resemble S. punduana, but some are also like S. roxburghii (such as minutely serrate leaves and peduncled cymes).
Therefore some more info may be helpful, such as:

1. No of lateral nerves (could not count clearly in the mature leaves in photos)

2. Season when  photograph taken

3. If leaves serrate/ minutely serrate

4. If leaves scaly/ hispid/ glabrous underneath the young/mature ones.

Regards

In response to above queries raised by KL Chaudhary Ji, I am attaching a picture of underside of leaf (point 1)
The pics were recorded in last week of June, 2017 (point 2)
The margins do not look serrate (even minutely) to me, at least on maturity (point 3)
I have no clues regarding 4th point..
Thanks

Peduncles and pedicels are looking glabrous, so it may be Saurauia fasciculata Wallich, well distributed in West Bengal (Darjeeling), Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. If Peduncles and pedicels are with scales and hairs then it is S. punduana Wallich. Regards T.K. Paul

Dear Garg ji,
I am writing in some characters that differentiates two spp.

But as of now I request Singh ji to kindly correspond some more characters from the photos he may have clicked in the field...

S. punduana :

1. Leaves 15-30 cm x 7-15 cm, elliptic, obovate, oblanceolate, acuminate, base rounded, truncate, serrate, glabrous above, nearly tomentose beneath, nearly rusty, lateral nerves usually over 30, petioles upto 5 cm long.

2. Flowers: 1-1.5 cm across; Fls. & Frts Apr- Dec. Fls white changing to pink; sepals glabrous; petals rounded, reflexed at tip

*** The above underlined chs. do not correspond atleast from the photos

S. roxburghii

1. Leaves usually glabrous beneath, young parts scurfy tomentose scaly, not hispid. 10-30 x 3.5 - 7 cm, elliptic, elliptic-lanceolate, oblanceolate, long acuminate, base cuneate, sometimes rounded, glabrous above, tomentose beneath, glabrescent with age, minutely serrate

2. Infl & Fls.: infl 2.5 - 4 cm long ; Fls pink abt 1 cm across ; Sepals ovate-lanceolate, acute, glabrous ; petals pale pink, recurved at tip; Fls & Frts. Mar- Oct

*** Underlined do not match photo characters

Though in one photo the young flower is clearly white and the older one pink.. which puts the spp closer to S. punduana, but not completely.

Regards
