Regarding the
Colquhounia coccinea images posted on eFI, I think only
Saroj's post from Nepal is
Colquhounia coccinea. All other images from West Himalaya belong to
Colquhounia vestita. The reason is as follows:Firstly, Colquhounia coccinea is found from Nepal eastwards. It is not found in West Himalaya, whereas Colquhounia vestita is found throughout the Himalayas (according to POWO).
Secondly, the stem, branches and leaf undersides in Colquhounia vestita are white-woolly, whereas they are not in Colquhounia coccinea (see
the key at FOC)
. This feature is quite visible in the images on eFI.
The confusion probably arose from Polunin & Stainton which mentions only Colquhounia coccinea and describes the distribution ranging from Uttarakhand, and says the leaf undersides are white woolly. Mostly likely they erroneously clubbed the two species into one.
