Sorry, I sent the wrong pics. These show the Hanky Sign, even in such a young Saraca asoca.

Hello Padmini ji
are you sure it is Lannea coromandelica...?
because i feeel the inflorescence is very dense and the branches of
teh inflorescence are drooping which is not the case in Lannea
coromandelica (where the inflorescence is lax, flowers carrying shade
of reddish-brown and inflorescence branches spreading).

Regards
Satish Pardeshi

... me too have a doubt about this being L. coromandelica. The blooming sight is very different.

Here in Western Ghats (my vicinity), the plants are already fruiting.

Regards.

I narrow down my guess to Trewia and Schleichera, close up of flowers
and leaves will clarify the ID. Regards, Shrikant

Padmini ji ... do you see many such trees in Chennai (and in similar phase) ?
If so, couple of similar views of another such tree (especially, along with views of bark and trunk) may throw more light on the ID.

Interesting plant.

Regards.

Padminiji,
Could you please give more information on the locality of this tree in Chennai? Where this is flowering in Chennai?

There is almost an avenue of these trees on White's Road, (the road connecting Mount Road to Royapettah Clock Tower).
This is a very common tree in Chennai. There are some on Kodambakkam High Road, near Palmgrove Hotel.
The leaves all fall off before the flowers show up.
I'll get some more shots tomorrow.
Rgds,
Padmini Raghavan.

Dear Mr. Garg,
Kindly excuse the delay in replying.
I am reasonably sure this is a Lannea coromandelica.
Here are the pics taken a few weeks later.
They are of the same tree.

Sure it is the same tree, only after a gap of about three weeks.

In that time the leaves have returned to make the identification easier. This is one of the commoner trees in Chennai.

Thanks,
Padmini Raghavan.
