Red coloured leaves  near Hampta Pass (Manali region).

Date/Time: 28-11-2010 / 11:45AM
Location: On the way to Hampta Pass (Altitude: approx. 14000 ft)
Habitat: Wild, (on the rock)
Plant Habit: Herb,

It looks so because many Alpine plants tend to develop reddish colour in autumn, towards the end of growing season.

Bergenia stracheyi (Hook.f. & Thomson) Engl. Bot. Zeitung (Berlin) 26: 842. 1868

Basionym: Saxifraga stracheyi Hook.f. & Thomson J. Proc. Linn. Soc.,
Bot. 2: 61. 1857

Bergenia is named for Karl August von Bergen, 18th century German
physician and botanist. He is among those authors who wrote botanical
treatise before Linnaeus, Flora Francofurtana (1750).

Sorry, missed..

stracheyi stands for Lt. Richard Strachey, 19th century official
within the Indian Civil Service and plant collector in Tibet. He was a
father of 13 by the way :).

Leaf reddening occurs due to high concrentration of anthocyanin
pigments formed as a result of low temperature and high intensity of
light. It is said that reddening the rate of photosynthesis hence
helps the plant survive adverse condition.

Sorry, I meant to say that reddening reduces the rate of photosynthesis.
