Bromus inermis Leyss., Fl. Hal. 16. 1761. 

Syn:  Festuca inermis (Leyss.) Lam. & DC. 

Common names: Awnless brome, smooth brome, Russian bromegrass

Perennial grass distinct from other species of Bromus in its narrow, strict erect awnless spikelets.

Perennial grass with solitary or loosely tufted stems up to 1 m tall; leaves glabrous or sparsely hairy, up to 30 cm long, 4-7 mm broad; spikelets narrowly oblong, 15-25 mm long, 6-12 flowered, forming 10-20 cm long panicle with 3-5 branches at each node; glumes unequal, lower 4-6 mm long, upper 6-9 mm long; lemmas 8-12 mm long, 5-7 veined, awnless or barely with 3 mm long awn.
