The seeds were from another tree of the same kind. The leaves looked like those of Parkia biglandulosa from a distance ( but had no glands on inspection.) There are several of these trees blooming now in Chennai.
The pods rattle as if there are seeds within.
Please help with id as I have been watching these trees for years and have only this year managed to catch sight of the flowers. The flowers are inconspicuous and the trees being tall, it was mainly the zoom lens which helped to see them.
Thanks,
Padmini Raghavan.

Hi Padmini ji, the fruits appear, to me, that of Ceasalpinia coriaria (Divi-Divi tree) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Caesalpinia_coriaria.jpg.

The flowering specimen belongs to probably Leucaena leucocephala. http://www.fao.org/ag/AGP/agpc/doc/gallery/pictures/leuleu.htm

Can you provide the local names of these trees?

With regards

R. Vijayasankar

Enterolobium cotortisiliquam, or the earlobe pod of Mimosaceae. The
pods are in the shape of ear lobe. Regards, Shrikant

Inga dulcis now correctly known as Pithecellobium dulce also has coiled fruit known as jungle jalebi. It has only two pinnae, each with just two leaflets, whereas this one has many many each with numerous small leaflets.

I think it should be Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Jacq.) Griseb. as per images herein.
Enterolobium contortisiliquum has not been reported from India as per ILDIS
