Hi,

Attaching photographs of flowers of Wild and Common Turmeric.

The Wild Turmeric flower was photographed near Pelling (Sikkim) in mid April of 2005 and the Common Turmeric flower from my garden in last year.

Wild Turmeric ( Jangli Haldi)
Scientific Name : Curcuma aromatica.
Family: Zingiberaceae.
Flower appears in early spring. When the blooming period is over the leaves appear and the plant attains a height of about 3 ft.
The leaves dies in autumn and the rhizomes become dormant in winter.
Found in Eastern Himalayas.
Uses : Wild turmeric has strong antibiotic properties. In Chinese medicine it is used for preventing and curing cancer.
Rhizome of wild turmeric is used for flavoring curries in hill villages.

Termeric ( Haldi)
Scientific Name : Curcuma longa.
Family : Zingiberaceae.

 Thanks,

Nice photos. In the Mumbai region, they will start blooming from mid
next month. Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the surrounding forests
of Thane distt just outside Bombay are full of these beauties as well
as wild ginger - costa (sorry dont remember the correct name). In
fact, now that the monsoon has started, every week has some new wild
flower to be discovered. Unfortunately, in some of the semi rural
areas just outside Bombay which are full of habenarias and other
ground orchids, the grazing animals destroy them as they come up.
Very soon they will all disappear.
