This was clicked in at Sattal near Nainital, Uttarakhand in May 2025.

Requested to please provide ID.

Is it some Daphne species?

Yes, you are right, Alka ji.
The following species found at lower elevations, but has red drupes (Flora of Pakistan):

Daphne sureil W. W. Smith & Cave also have red drupes as per Flora of China.
In that case, it should be (though reported distribution as per POWO is E. Nepal to China (Sichuan, NW. Yunnan):
https://efloraofindia.com/efi/daphne-bholua/ (found at lower elevations as per Checklist of Nepal with black drupes)

I think this could be D. Bhola as the fruits seem to be axillary.

This plant was seen at various places along the way from Nainital to Pangot, all with black drupes.

According to the color of fruits it should be Daphne bholua Buchanan-Hamilton ex D. Don, but not sure.
