I found this Bauhinia to be very common in Assam too – Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park, Assam, as well as along the route to Roing, Arunachal Pradesh, which is approx. 5 hours by road from Tinsukhia, Assam. What species please?

Cheers,

Hi, Kiran ji,
It appears quite similar to me to Bauhinia purpurea (Kaniar) except for the colour of the flowers (i.e. white instead of purple). Is it some variety?
See from Indiantreepix Database:
Bauhinia purpurea (syn. B. malabarica)  Fabaceae Kaniar, Butterfly tree, Germanium tree, orchid tree, sona, karali   Flowering in Feb.'08 in Chennai; records of flowering on 30/10/05 & 27/1/07 in Kolkata; flowering on 23-Mar-2008- Pondicherry; in Lalbagh,Bangalore on 12.10.08; Trees of Delhi-  Flowers October to December; prime time in Mid Nov.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bauhinia_purpurea Kaniar (Butterfly tree or Orchid tree or Geranium tree etc.)- Bauhinia purpurea - indiantreepix | Google Groups House Sparrows (Juveniles)- Passer domesticus on Bauhinia purpurea (Kaniar) - indiantreepix | Google Groups Flowering Tree For Id 170408Raghu1 - indiantreepix | Google Groups Bauhinia species-2- for ID241008RK2 - indiantreepix | Google Groups

Here is a reply from Deepa Mohan ji:
"Having also seen many of these in the Guwahati to Kaziranga trip, I was thinking...aren't these Bauhinea alba? Not sure (as usual!) though...experts, please confirm!
Cheers, Deepa."

Going by its flower buds & petals, I don't think it's Bauhinea alba or Bauhinia variegata var. candida/ alba.
