Hello friends

This tree/large shrub was seen by the roadside in the Tamhini ghat near Pune, MH in Aug 2025.
Am confused between Pavetta crassicaulis and P. indica
Is there any way to differentiate?

Regards

We may take it as based on its distribution:
https://efloraofindia.com/efi/pavetta-crassicaulis/

The following is the AI view on google search:
Pavetta crassicaulis is often treated as a synonym or a variety of Pavetta indica, making it difficult to establish a clear difference based on available information; however, some sources suggest P. crassicaulis may be more specific to the distribution in the Western and Southern parts of India, while P. indica has a broader range across the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia. Therefore, it's likely that Pavetta crassicaulis is a specific variant or synonym of the more widely recognized Pavetta indica.
Distribution and Identity
  • Pavetta indica:
This species has a broader distribution, found from the Indian Subcontinent through China and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Pavetta crassicaulis:
Some sources indicate that P. crassicaulis has a more limited distribution, being found in West and South India. It is also listed as an accepted species name, with P. stocksii as a synonym, according to some references.
Relationship Between the Two
  • One source indicates that Pavetta crassicaulis could be a synonym for Pavetta indica.
  • Another source suggests that while both are accepted species names, they are distinct species with different distributional ranges, implying P. crassicaulis might be a specific regional variation or synonym.
Conclusion
While P. indica is a widely accepted species name with broad distribution, P. crassicaulis appears to be either a closely related, potentially synonymous species or a variety of P. indica, with its distinctiveness not always clearly defined across all sources.
