Plant uploaded by Nabha ji as sweet Karela finally turned out to be Cyclanthera pedata. I found it grown and sold in Manali. The local people know it simply as Karela. My Bengali fiend says it is known to them as Kakora. I am uploading some photographs.

The discussion in that thread also threw up Sechium edule, whose photographs I had uploaded from California. It is sold in California markets as Chayota  squash. My Bengali friend was carrying the fruit in his bag, calling it simply as squash.
