Dodonaea viscosa is differentiated from D. angustifolia (now treated as D. viscosa f. angustifolia (POWO, WFO) or D. viscosa subsp. angustifolia; leaves elliptic lanceolate, with acute to acuminate apex, flowers mostly unisexual, scar of sepals on fruit annular or slightly lobed, fruit wings with reddish tinge) ) in obovate-oblanceolate leaves, subacute to notched at tip, distinctly tapered towards base, flowers mostly bisexual, scar of sepals strongly bilobed and fruit wings straw coloured or brown. The form with purple colour leaves is often listed as subsp. atropurpurea (with no authentic publication) or cultivar 'Atropurpurea' but widely recognised as cultivar 'Purpurea'. Sharing the same from Fremont California here.
