After further study, and photographing a mature fruit which has turned yellow about 3 cm in size, nearly globose, I have identified the plant as Cucumis melo. subsp. agrestris  var. agrestris. Locally known as Kachri, I was told than more than varieties are found in the area, some with less deeply lobed leaves and some with longer, somewhat elongated fruits. Hope to locate these.  Comments are welcome.
