It's in the Lauraceae, like cinnamon.
Called here the Avocado (ah-voh-cah-doh), originally Avocado Pear. Here it is not much used as a substitute for butter, but as a delicious base for making guacamole (gwah-cah-moh-lee), a mexican paste with lime, cilantro, garlic and salt, used as a dip and a spread. It is also eaten sliced on sandwiches and in salads, and all by itself.
