Dear Friends
This is a tree photographed on the slopes of Velliangiri forest last
month. The tree was just beginning to leaf and it was filled with
fruits.
Family Bignoniaceae
Radermachera xylocarpa (Roxb.) Schumann
( Syn : Bignonia Xylocarpa, Stereospermum xylocarpum, Sapthodea xylocarpa)
Common names :English : Walking stick, Trumpet tree, Padri tree.
Tamil : Kalpadiri, Vadancarni,Pathiri,Onthi, Vedamukurunai, kadalathi.
Kannada : Genasing, Huvvulave
Telugu : Naguru, Naga-Dundilam
Marathi : Kharsinge, Barsinge
( technical description taken from Fr.Mathew's book on Flora of the Tamilnadu Carnatic)
Deciduous tree common to the peninsular region. Height from 12- 20 m. Flowers in corymbose panicles. coroola white, 4cm across, funnel shaped.The fruits are Capsules elongate, terete, with tuberculate epicarp ( that is the bumpy protrusions seen on the fruit) winged seeds.
