2020- A memorable year for efloraofindia

Dear members,

Along with normal discussions, the year started with bang with efloraofindia being appreciated in an open forum by a top world renowned Taxonomist Taxonomist in an International Conference in Kolkata. And with efloraofindia presentation in International Symposium on Plant taxonomy & Ethnobotany 2020-BSI, Kolkata by Nidhan Singh ji.

Saroj Kasaju set a blazing trail with innumerable high resolution postings along with taking up systematic look at our unidentified posts in efloraofindia site. He achieved a landmark of 20,000 messages (with a total of 8338 messages in 2020), only just a way behind Gurcharan Singh ji. Paradesi ji was the one who gave company to Saroj ji in identifying posted plants quickly in the group. Pl. see Sh. Pardesi Anjineyulu- Genius on efloraofindia. Gurcharan Singh ji, Pitamah of efloraofindia, joined our activities after a long hiatus, giving it a big boost. He along with D S Rawat ji compiled a list of species for many families, which were included in the site. Aarti ji, Mahadeswara ji, Bala ji, Dinesh ji, Bijaya ji, Pankaj ji, Alka ji, Nidhan ji, Suhaib ji, Anil ji and others continued their activity of posting plants and trying to identify them, in a major way. Our activities and output was not diminished even by the onset of Covid-19 in 2020.

efloraofiindia turned 13 and while efloraofindia site completed 10 years, which were the occasions of showcasing our achievements.

More than 2,80,000 images were displayed on almost all discussion threads in efloraofindia site. 238 families were completed with comparative images, even as a shock came in August from Google of disbanding Classic google sites by 31.10.21.

Google groups were also changed from Classic to New. This led to numerous problems not only for some members, but for all of us. Numerous messages were shown as deleted and not many messages came to the group itself. After four- five months of struggle, things finally settled.

After a lot of discussions with moderators, we came out with a specification for our new site and with God's grace we finally managed to migrate our contents and get our new efloraofindia.com site on 3rd of Dec'2020, with minimum possible damages. Restoration, in particular to formatting, has been started and it may take a few years.

Dinesh Valke ji, one of our main contributors, also faced similar hurdles with his Google classic site- Names of Plants in India and finally decided to move on with migration to his Blogger site.

The 2020 journey of eFI was of determined growth. The Classic to New version of Google Sites neither hampered its existence nor migration to a fresh space with new CMS (content management system). All of its content is almost intact, except for formatting, which can be tackled as and when a page is tackled for updating.

Efloraofindia has grown up tremendously under the leadership of stalwarts like Garg sir. Indeed some tiny potatoes like me contributed some tiny bits. But what we have come to, couldn't have been possible without Gurcharan sir, Dinesh sir and many many names already present in the first post.

I am glad to be a part of this family, although I have not contributed much in the recent times.

But perhaps we have to be more careful now. Every Google search now displays our species very prominently, and any wrong identification gets prominently displayed when we choose image display. It is important as such that our doubtful identifications are prominently marked so. We have a long list of doubtful and unidentified photographs. We are trying our best to focus on these and our experts are helping a lot. Sooner this number reduces the better.
