Lovely pictures.
In our young days we read an essay by Hazari Prasad Dwivedi in which he lamented the disappearance of the red orange flowers of ashok and  the present non- descript flowers of Ashok (longifolia). Doyen as he was of literature, he was not aware that they are two different trees: seeta ashok and polyalthia longifolia.

Hi ranjini ji,
beautiful pics of flowers.
uploaded few more pics of Saraca asoca (Seeta ashok) flowers, mature leaves and pods.
pics taken at V J B Udyan, Byculla, Mumbai and B P T garden, Colaba, Mumbai
Marathi name : Seeta Ashok
Family :Caesalpiniaceae

Interesting info from the book 'Trees of Mumbai' :
1) This evergreen tree has several medicinal properties. The bark of the tree is used to cure various uterine problems. The juice of the leaves mixed with cumin is used for stomach ache. The leaves also possess blood purifying properties.

2) According to Ramayana, Seeta was held captive in the Ashoka van when in the custody of Ravana at Sri Lanka. Therefore, this tree is known as Seeta Ashoka.

3) Myth : This tree blooms only after it is touched by the feet of a beautiful woman!

cheers,
shubhada
