Yes, Surajit...
This is the water hyacinth that is as beautiful as it is tiresome weedy growth... choking the waterways of the world... including India...  roots give a safe heaven to all and sundry creatures including the mosquitoes larvae  ... and makes waterways non-navigable and sweet water slow-moving rivers into stale water.

Now a days at least in Bengal they have found use as a green fodder for cows .. a misguided effort since low quality milk is produced that in turn creates increased in- digestibility in people who drink it....   hope they have abandoned the idea  BUT will never know since advent of the co-operative dairy culture all milk is mixed up and Nobody is responsible for good or bad milk....

SECONDLY ... dried Kachuri-pana plants are processed to yield fibres of sorts to make paper and decorative "Natural" coverings for book binding and gift boxes... and lampshades... insects love them and so  I  dont think this is going to last too long since the novelty would wear off and sales will plummet... this initial effort is grassroots based  and hence low tech with glue that is used is rice starch based and the insects may also be attracted to that element...

unless some high tech solution is found .. some continuities have taken to drying the plants and burning, using the ash to add to soil.. but this would turn out to be mistake when it would be found that very high toxic levels of heavy metals are concentrated in them....

Poor water hyacinth plant... what bad Karma produced it....

Good morning Usha Di,

Thank you for all these info on water hyacinth. I would like to add that though are much publicized as weeds, to some animals they are useful too, a perfect hiding place for waterbirds, water monitor, and maybe a breeding / nesting ground to some, including mosquitoes.

Regards,

surajit
