Sir / Madam,

Attaching some photographs that i have recorded a couple of hours ago. Please read it along with my earlier post at - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw.

Species : UNKNOWN
Habit & Habitat : wild herb, uncultivated area in mango orchard
Date : 08-05-12, 09.04 a.m.
Place : Nalikul (Hooghly), WB

I have noted the following differences between the two species -

1) Marked difference in anther size and colour : this species has smaller anther and pollens are yellow
2) Difference in scape height : the height os the scape of this one is about 60 cm, while the scape is more than 70 cm in https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw
3) No differences in flower size or scape diameter
4) No visible difference in colour

Thank you & Regards,

Surajit Koley

Thank you Garg Sir, for resurfacing the post. I think this species is Hippeastrum roseum as has been suggested by Ganesh Ji in another post -  https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw

Samir Ji,

Just now it comes to my notice that i made a big mistake in my earlier reply. The plant in my post looks more like Hippeastrum roseum than H. puniceum.

Samir Ji,

Thank you very much for bearing with me. Leave alone those species, i searched the net a lot to understand differences between Hippeastrum and Lycoris but failed to find any. Do you have any idea as to why the flowers in my other post (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw) bear different anthers?

Thank you once again for your kind message.

Regards,

Surajit Koley

Dear Pankaj Ji,

I am very nervous relating to anything on education. Barring a few exception, i don't even know the local names of flora or fauna species, only acquired some bookish knowledge, that too very little.

And i admitted/confessed the above many a times, including the time of joining in each group :-

I have never claimed that i know something on anything. Even then if any of my messages bears the slightest hints of my self-esteem i apologize before all.

So. how am i supposed to know if the concerned species is H. vittatum of not?

Regards,

Surajit Koley

This link. Mr Ganesh Mani Pradhan is too humble to write that, but
infact he is a well known figure and a very famous horticulturist and
orchid expert :).

Dear Surajit:

Mr Ganesh Pradhan had responded in your own thread of May 2012 named " Lycoris sanguinea in bamboo thicket from Hooghly"

his response is addressed to Shetur... has 3 or 4 links and a write up about his experience in it...  its a very nice description of his experience in the hills...

hope you find it: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/indiantreepix/lycoris/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw/YbdfrsfHToYJ

yours/ ours   ...  experience in the plains may be different months  for flowering (because of temp variation and humidity etc) but I think what he says about plants habit to flower at end of growing for one species versus the other must hold true even in the hot gangetic plains...

it now remains for the rest of us to keep tabs on our bulbs/lillies for the nexrt winter // spring // early summer for their growth and flowering habits to make any sense of it for ourselves and to share at eflora...

ps ekti kotha boli? moneee korona .... oto nomro howar kono dorkar neyi, you are doing fine, nijeke kono din chhoto korbe na, bhogoban khushi hon na taa te....   we are all onar - i  shontan, onar roop... onar motoyi bhalo...

Usha Di,

What i learned from Ganesh Ji's reply to Shetur Ji :-

1) Lycoris is of Asian origin, winter grower, flowers in summer after loosing their leaves

All the above matches with my post "Lycoris sanguinea in bamboo thicket from Hooghly" at - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw

2) Hippeastrum is native to S. America, go dormant in winter, flower from early spring, ...in Kalimpong have just finished flowering... April/May

The above text and images available in the net indicates my second post, titled "Hippeastrum roseum or Lycoris sanguinea ??? from Hooghly 08-05-12 SK-1", at - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/SdvtSZa_L4Q features either Hippeastrum roseum or H. puniceum or H. vittatum as have been suggested/indicated by Ganesh Ji, Samir Ji and Pankaj Ji respectively.

Good morning Pankaj Ji

Thank you so dearly for providing me the link of Ganesh Ji's reply. I think the content is same as in https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw . Ganesh Ji identified the species as H. roseum, not H. vittatum !!!

Moreover, i copy here my earlier reply to Garg Sir that can be found in this very post -

"Thank you Garg Sir, for resurfacing the post. I think this species is Hippeastrum roseum as has been suggested by Ganesh Ji in another post -  https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/indiantreepix/pW4Kpmc7KAw
Regards,
Surajit Koley"

Furthermore, the following link indicates that what are known as H. roseum are actually H. puniceum. Please see - http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbslist/2011-September/174k90a79nc5oim3j5t88rfqa3.html The same has been suggested by Samir Ji.

So, what i should go for? H. roseum? H.puniceum? H. vittatum? Or do i take all for synonyms?

Regards,

Surajit Koley
