Collected on 30/08/25 and 20/09/25 

Location: Near Shegaon - 444203, Dist Buldana Maharashtra  

Coordinates: 20.8486680, 76.6739897 

Elevation: 275 m (902 ft) 

Habitat: Black soil and near water flow.

The taxonomy of this species is highly disputed. It belongs to Maydeae and is treated under Polytoca, Chionachne, Coix, etc. by various authors. To confirm the identity, it is necessary to see the female spikelets which is usually seen at the base of the male inflorescence, within a modified white shelled involucre. Please open up the bracts of the inflorescence to see if any female spikelets are there. If there is a single elliptic shell like structure, it could be Polytoca barbata = Chionachne koenigii.

Nice to know that you have been observing the progression of flowering of this grass.

It is confirmed Polytoca barbata=Chionachne koenigii as suggested earlier. The elliptic seed like structure is actually the female spikelet enclosed in modified involucre like structure. In case of Coix lachryma-jobi, this will be ovoid in shape with wide base and narrow tip.
