Ailanthus excelsa is commonly known as: Coromandel ailanto, tree of heaven • Gujarati:

Dear friends, while gathering the names from internet, found that this Tree of heaven shares names with the adulasa plant Adhatoda vasica at least in two languages.
Gujarati: અરડૂસો araduso
Sanskrit: अटरूषकः atarusaka

Am wondering what can be the reason for that ... could be some similar medicinal quality.
Can someone throw some light in this regard.

Regards.

Garg ji
Tree of heaven name actually belongs to Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Syn: A. glandulosa Desf. The Indian plant A. excelsa is better known as Indian Tree of heaven.

My information based on Useful plants of India by CSIR gives these names:

Adhatoda vasica: Sans: vasaka; Guj: Alduso

Ailanthus excelsa: Madala; Guj: ardusi;

Many thanks Gurcharan ji, for another name madala in Sanskrit.
The Gujarati name ardusi ... taking it as a variant / form of araduso ... which as said refers to Adhatoda vasica.
All chances, I may be mistaking.

Dear friends,

My expression may have led to confusion.

Reiterating my query:

Names of the Indian Tree of Heaven Ailanthus excelsa, especially these two:
(1) Gujarati: અરડૂસો araduso, (2) Sanskrit: अटरूषकः atarusaka
are same as that of the adulasa plant Adhatoda vasica.

What could be the reason for sharing names ?

Please respond only in this context.

Regards.

Both are not eaten by goats?! due to foetid smell?

'Adu' in Tamil means Goat and 'thoda' means untouched i.e. not eaten.

...no idea Dinesh ji.

Yazdi ji, this is the exact kind of curiosity that I have about it getting compared with Adulsa.

Yazdi ji
It is mahaneem, and the reason is quite obvious. If there is any tree with which one can confuse it it, it is neem, though it has larger leaves. An average person, not very well versed with trees, can easily mistake the two. The inference is obvious.
