Hi all,
I came across this tree in Delhi.
But am unable to identify it except as a Bauhinia.
Would appreciate if someone identifies it.
It is in flower right now in March.

The yellow-flowered one looks like Bauhinia tomentosa to me. Each petal normally has a maroon spot at the base.

Attn. Ms Janaki Durga,
Looks like   the flower of Bauhinia tomentosa.  It is not B. variegata or B.purpurea or even B. racemosa.      This is a small tree or a large bush, 2-3meters high , contstantly in blossom in South India( flush season during June - July).  The flowers are sulfur yellow with a dark purple centre.  The flowers generally half open and look downwards (at almost 45 degree angle).  The colour chages to copper yellow as it fades.  The flowers are used  for worship in South India  and therefore grown in temples and private gardens. Please check for these details and report for confirmation.  The tree has not been reported  in Trees of Delhi by Pradip Kishen.
Local names : Kan: Vanasampige; Tam: Tiruvatti; kolakattai mandarai.

Dear Dr. Mahadeswara Swamy,
Thanks for the response, here is the close up of the flower.
Based on your description the tree/shrub appears to be B tomentosa.
If the flower close up is not adequate, then let me know, I shall post
the foliage pics in couple of days.
Pradip Krishen has said that the list in his book is a comprehensive
one, but not completely exhaustive and that more species are being
added, and that he had to limit the number of species for his book.
I have seen this tree in 2 separate localities in Delhi.
Hope the flower close up helps.

I forgot, but I this flower has a maroon base in the center. rest of
the description matches, though I have not seen a faded flower-or
rather noticed it, but shall keep my eyes open.

Hi
This is obviously Bauhinia tomentosa and not Gossypium herbaceum.Gossypium herbaceum.has similar colour pattern but please observe the pattern of leaves wgich will lead you to genus Bauhinia. Attaching a photo from a local garden in Pune Kothrud area as an ornamental.
