Hello again,
Here's a Polystichum sp. (I'm not even sure about this) from a side of the road from Dirang to Sela pass, at an altitude of around 3500m.

Many thanks.
Benoît

Yes, there are other collections of it from Dirang too.  It is Polystichum levingii C.Jope ex Christ (syn. P. stenophyllum), which has a subapical proliferous bulbil.

I haven't sent the books yet, but will do and my unfinalised Arunachal Pradesh fern-book..

Chris

Here is a list of M. Benoit Segerer's ferns from India and Nepal.

1.     Azolla pinnata subsp. asiatica, not “A. filiculoides”. Oriya, Rajasthan

2.     Adiantum capillus-veneris, not “Black”, just Maiden-hair and not A. philippense as I wrote.  Try to show lamina-bases, not just apices! Mt. Abu, Rajasthan.

3.     Pteris vittata (sensu stricto), young fronds not so good, here the apex of mature fertile fronds is important. Khumbalgarh, C. India.

4.     Hypodematium crenatum, sterile frond apex, not determinable to subspecies. Khumbalgarh, C. India

5.     Yes, more probably Aleuritopteris bicolor.  When like this I soak them out in water first until expanded, but the diagnostic feature is the very narrow scales at the stipe-base only. Khumbalgarh, C. India.

6.     Aleuritopteris anceps  But you must show the whole frond from underneath so we can see the lamina-base and see if there are scales up the rachis and on the pinna-costae – and again we have to see the stipe-base and its scales.   Not A. scioana, confined in India to the Rajasthan desert and only twice collected so far and is very different.  Khumbalgarh, C. India.

7.     Hymenophyllum tenellum, too immature, small plants and sori not easily visible. Kameng, Sessa (Orchid Sanctuary?), Ar. Pr.

8.     Hymenophyllum tenellum, but please try to show a fertile frond. Kameng, Dirang.

9.     Polystichum levingei. Dirang to Tawang, Ar. Pr.

10.  Lepisorus probably thunbergianus or contortus. Dirang to Tawang, Ar. Pr.

11.  Pyrrosia drakeana, but very small plant. Dirang to Tawang, Ar. Pr.

12.  Pteris aspericaulis. Good photos of top surface, exactly as needed. Rupa, Bomdila, Ar. Pr.

13.  Polystichum cyclolobum. Rupa to Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

14.  Angiosperm, ?Thalictrum sp., with some moribund Selaginella vaginata on left. Rupa to Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

15.  Diplopterygium giganteum. Diagnostic scales below terminal bud not shown.Near Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

16.  Pteridium revolutum, South Asian Bracken. Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

17.  Dicranopteris taiwanensis. Near Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

18.  Polypodiodes amoena, immature frond and rhizome needs to be shown. Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

19.  Tectaria Morata, we also need to see the stipe, with its scales. Nr. Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

20.  Dryopteris atrata. Near Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

21.  Pteris probably mawsmaiensis (many shortish stiff, purple setae above long, narrowish, non-apiculate pinnule-midribs). Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

22.  Tectaria polymorpha (Dryopteridaceae -Tectarioideae). Nr. Eagle’s nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

23.  Polystichum lentum (has a subapical proliferous bulbil). Nr. Eagle’s nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

24.  Equisetum arvense subsp. diffusum (note double sheath-ridges). Near Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

25.  Nephrolepis cordifolia. Nr. Khellong, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

26.  Thelypteris (Sect. Menisciopsis) probably penangiana, but a bit difficult to eliminate completely T. (Abacopteris) nudata, as we need to see youngish sori (indusiate in T. nudata).  But this is surely T. penangiana.  Khellong, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

27.  Thelypteris (Sect. Pseudocyclosorus) cana (hairy beneath costae, veins free, and we can just see the reduced loer pinnae in the first photo; though creeping rhizome not shown). Khellong, Kameg, Ar. Pr.

28.  Athyrium eburneum, Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

29.  Lepisorus contortus. Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

30.  Dryopteris atrata (with a Selaginella monospora or pallida) and a Pteris and Tectaria polymorpha. Nr. Khellong, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

31.  Angiosperm, probably Daucaceae, not a fern. Near Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

32.  Lepisorus scolopendrium (note short, dark scales below lamina-midrib). Nr. Eagle’s nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

33.  Microsorum (syn.: “Bosmania”) membranaceum. Nr. Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary, Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh.

34.  Coniogramme pubescens. Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

35.  Asplenium ensiforme. Nr. Eagle’s Nest, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

36.  Asplenium lacinioides (probably to be called A, guenzianum, from “Africa” in error), too small and immature plant. S. of Rupa, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

37.  Onychium vermae/lucidum aggregate.  Sterile fronds in that group are unidentifiable. S. of Rupa, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

38.  Diplazium probably maximum, but all Diplazium must show the stipe with its basal scales, to be identifiable, so this can’t be confirmed from these photos.  South of Rupa, Kameng, Ar, Pr.   D. maximum is edible.

39.  Highly immature leaf of Pteris cretica or a Coniogramme such as C. serrulata.  Immature specimens are not worth photographing. S. of Rupa, Kameng, Ar. Pr.

40.  Polystichum obliquum, but very poor, immature and sterile. Nr. Meghma, Sandakphoo, Ilam Distr, Nepal.

41.  Polystichum squarrosum. N.W. of Pashupatinagar, Ilam, Nepal.

42.  Highly juvenile baby plant of Dryopteris splendens, not worth photographing. W. of Tonglo Hill, Ilam, Nepal.

43.  Immature plant of Polystichum thomsonii, poor specimen. Nr. Manbhanjyang, Darjeeling Distr., W. Bengal.

Best wishes,
Chris F.-J.
