The name pencilflower can directly be transcribed to பென்சில் பூ (pencil poo) in Tamil. There are more formal names available for pencil, such as karikkol கரிக்கோல், but they are too formal and are not commonly used.

So, Stylosanthes scabra can be called சொர சொர பென்சில் பூ (sora sora pencil poo = rough pencil flower).

There are quite a few species of Stylosanthes that have been introduced in India for production of forage.

One name "pencilflower" is sometimes used for plants in this genus.

I went ahead to check possible words for pencil in Tamil, of which I found இலேகனி ilekani appropriate to go with பூ pu for flower.

Often I found that whenever "pu" is compounded to a word at the end, it gets the form "-p-pu"

Thus would it be இலேகனிப்பூ ilekani-p-pu

Further, I am coining name for Stylosanthes scabra Vogel

The epithet scabra implies rough or coarse texture

Thus I would think of following adjectives:

ரப்பு rappu
மோட்டா motta

Thus:

ரப்பு இலேகனிப்பூ rappu ilekani-p-pu OR மோட்டா இலேகனிப்பூ motta ilekani-p-pu
