Dear All,
Thank you for identification. Especially, Dinesh Valke who provided
first hand hint, which was followed by Barry Stock and Ajinkya Gadave
with reciprocal picture. Its is Pachira aquatica. Some useful
information on it (compiled from various sources on the net):
1. Common name: Guyana Chestnut
2. It is naturally found along estuaries and lakeshores in the
tropical rainforests of Mexico, Central and South America. In their
native terrain, they can achieve heights of 100 feet or more, growing
quickly in wet weather and developing thick buttresses to support
themselves.
3. Fruit is quite a big size, and seeds are edible. Eaten either raw
or cooked, taste like ground nuts.
4. It can easily be propagated from seeds or by air layering of soft
wood cuttings.
Personal observation:
First 3 flowers withered without any sign of successful pollination.
I have hand pollinated 1 flower on the morning of 30 Jun. Tomorrow I
will check for the success. Will also try air layer and cuttings for
rooting.
Thanks all again.
Regards,
Naresh Pancholi
