I found banglapedia very useful as it gives the English names of so many local greens and vegetables.

The link tells us that Shakalu is "Yam bean"  in English...and its botanical name is Pachyrrhizus tuberosa.
So may be you can update that discussion with this information...if u find it correct.

Thank you very much for the ID. Its really nice to know this 'Bengali childhood fruit' does have an English/botanical name!!
