Hi Ranjini and all,

Good Pics. I had seen these during our Shillong visit in March this year at various places. I am posting the one we saw at the experimental botanical park,Shillong for comparison. An interesting fact is the number of variable species of C.japonica and variable colours from  white to  shades of pink to red. Some of the C. japonica are named as C. japonica 'Lady Vansittart' (white and pink), C japonica 'Apple blossom' (very light pink), C.japonica 'Adophe Audusson'(orange red), C.japonica 'Extravaganza' (dark orange red), C. japonica 'Purity' (white with tinge of yellow), C.japonica 'Cinderalla' (red pink).

regards,
Rashida.

Nice pic Ranjini.  Would also have liked  a pix of the front of the flower.
It must be rare for Camellias to flower as far south as Bangalore.
C. japonica is from the same genus as Camellia sinensis, the leaves of which provide us with Tea. Tea flowers are white, but it is rare to see a Tea flower  in Darjeeling, since the the  Tea "  trees " are heavily pruned to a height of 3' - 4', which may be over 100 yrs old. For more info here is a link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camellia.
