"Dear Mr Garg,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the origins of the latin name of Mahua. Why was it called Bassia longifolia before and when did the name change to Madhuca indica and why ?
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks
Aniruddha"

Hello Aniruddha ji,

The genus name Madhuca is derived from the Sanskrit (as is) name of the tree.
Not sure of the reason why it was called Bassia longifolia before.

Names of Madhuca longifolia (var. latifolia) ... syn. Bassia latifolia, Illipe latifolia, Madhuca indica, Madhuca latifolia in Sanskrit are: मधूकः madhuca, मधूकम् madhucam, मोह moha
