Yes, these look like Golden Cane Palm, Areca Palm, or Butterfly Palm
Dypsis lutescens
http://www.junglemusic.net/gallery2/dispimage.asp?id=1400
Ringed stem is diagnostic.

Tabish sir, I thought this plant to be some species of
Chrysalidocarpus.... very common in garden, sometimes even planted
indoors, but surely a huge plant, it should be very old, may be above
50-60 years old.......

I am extremely sorry. You are right and partially me too. This is:

Dypsis lutescens (H.Wendl.) Beentje & J.Dransf., Palms Madagascar: 212
(1995).
Syn: Chrysalidocarpus lutescens H.Wendl., Bot. Zeitung (Berlin) 36:
171 (1878).
Endemic to Madagascar....

I think I should go to Madagascar some day before I die!!!

Pankaj

Dear Pankaj Ji,
You are spot on. The house was built in 1945. The palms must have been
planted around the same time. As a kid I remember them to be at least
10' tall.
Regards
Yazdy.

Dear Mr. Bhat,
It is not areca, though in the background you do see a very tall areca
palm. The areca palm in the background will be less than half the age
of these decorative palms. However, the nuts from this palm is also
collected when the market value for areca nut is steep. These nuts are
also sold as brocken areca nuts by local people.
Regards
Yazdy.
