Vinod--
This is a complex group of species and hybrids in the US. You are definitely correct on the genus, and I'd give you odds (i.e.: you are probably correct) on the species as well.

If it is not ficus variety, it has to belong to poplar family. The only doubt I have for eastern cottonwood is that Pradip Krishen's book shows leaves which have bulges in between the veins, whereas the picture you took has smooth top. Ficus rumphii? But the picture in Bose's book shows longer and narrower leaves, Further confirmation can be had only after seeing its flowers and fruits. Sorry.

The leaf matches exactly the description mebnntioned in Pradip Krishen's book(size nearly 25 cm,Toothed margins all around except near apex which is pointed, flat and broad base, leaf stalk flattened near leaf blade).I couldnt see any flowers or fruit on the tree

Vinod! You and Kenneth must be right. The only doubt I had was that Pradip Krishen's book showed bulge between the veins and the photographs you have sent has smooth surface.
All the best,.

Akbhatt--
You can confirm that the tree is not a Ficus species by breaking off a leaf or twig and checking for latex (white sap). Ficus will have latex; Populus will not.
