Please help in ID of this Solanum sp., photographed from Dakpathar. Looks similar to S. torvum, but leaves are totally glabrous and shining with no prickles on leaf, few straight ones on stem.

I still think this is Solanum torvum.

I also think it is Solanum torvum. It is interesting to see the prickle-less leaves.
However, FoC describes the leaves as 'armed or unarmed'.

Sir,

about prickle on leaves of Solanum torvum Sw. -
Sir Prain recorded "leaves not prickly on the nerves"
Haines recorded, "leaves without prickles or with one only beneath near the base of midrib"
FoC says armed or unarmed
some other sources echo above

about prickle on stem-
should be recurved as major sources I find record

So, the only hurdle remains is the glabrous shinning leaf. Here I fail to find any strong support. One weak support I find is stellate hair is sparse on upper surface of leaf - http://www.starrenvironmental.com/publications/species_reports/pdf/solanum_torvum.pdf. But this doesn't explain your point.

Thank you
Regards

Any chances of Solanum hispidum? Though S.hispidum also have spines.

It is Solanum torvum only, here flowers white,  smaller,  matured fruits also green.Leaves will have less spines. Fruits not bitter and is used as a vegetable. It may be an introduced taxon.

I agree with Rawat Sir. Though again can't explain leaf texture. Also prickles on stem is short and recurved. But reddish hair can be seen in the first pic. Fruiting sepals longer, not clear though in the first pic. Water side habitat another point in favour. Shiny leaf maybe yet another.

S. hispidum non. Pers may have unarmed flowering branches sometimes.

Thank you
Regards
surajit
