Perennial grass up to 150 cm tall; leaf-blades up to 30 cm long, 3-5 mm broad, sparsely hairy; panicle with stiff erect branches bearded at tip with 2-3 jointed short racemes; spikelets reddish, in pairs, one sessile, and one stalked; sessile spikelet with laterally compressed 6-8 mm long minutely hispidulous lower glume, upper glume awnless or with up to 10 mm long awn; stalked spikelet with lower glume bearing 4-7 mm long awn.
