I found some of these Pongamia pinnata trees fruiting in Panhala during Dec 2010 trip
Apart from the conventional shape of the fruits some round fruits were also observed. Is it normal or unusual? Is the tree ID correct?
I have never seen this earlier.

This does look like Pongamia pinnata, now known as Millettia pinnata
(L.) Panigrahi
Thanks for sharing.

For me it looks like Millettia pinnata ( syn.Pongamia pinnata) only.
I verified the leaves and fruits of the tree in front of my house.
They match .
On this tree the galls are usually formed especially on leaves. Most
of the time one can see deformed leaves with galls. Perhaps the
spherical formations in the photograph may be initiation of such galls
at the end of the fallen fruits base. But, I am not sure.

Two types of galls are commonly seen in Pongamia pinnata: one with elongated swellings on leaf-surface, caused by Eriophyes cheriani; and the other with globose, hard, 5-8 mm dia., spherical structures that are often mistaken for normal fruits, caused by Asphondylia pongamiae (Source: Mani, M.S. 1965. Key to plant galls from India. Bull. Bot. Surv. India 7: 89-127).
