While NPGS / GRIN puts this plant as native of the tropics of Africa, Asia through Australia ... http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?401632
PIER puts it otherwise: native of the tropics of the new world ... http://www.hear.org/pier/species/elephantopus_mollis.htm.

Any thoughts ?

Elephantopus scaber L. Sp. Pl. 2: 814. 1753

Type: Lectotype = "Ana-schovadi" in Rheede, Hort. Malab., 10: 13, t. 7, 1690

IPNI says this is cosmopolitan in distribution in tropics so that
means it is found in both New and the Old World. I assume Dinesh sir
already knows about old and new world. What ever may be the case, this
plant was described for the first time from India itself.

Pankaj

Was wondering about nativity.
