The Kigelia africana is in full bloom all over Chennai. It is a pleasure to see the flowers strewn all under the trees in the mornings.
As it was cloudy, I managed to get one infloresence in situ.
 The buds are also seen.

All the photos would have been a great catch but hopefully you trembled looking at the beauty of the flowers

Long time back in a small writeup of National Geographic I read that Red Indian used the juice of the leaves of this tree- Kijelia pinnata- to treat skin malignancy.
During British time a pod of the tree came to Bombay Presidecy shores with the sea waves and it flurished in our climate happily.

Nice big inflorescence. I remember I had seen them in IIT Madras campus which is a very good biodiversity area.

there are a few very good trees at Dadar Parsi colony, Mumbai.
recently i observed this plant being planted on a large scale as
avenue in new developing areas around Mumbai and at New mumbai. a few
plants are also present in Pune. one tree i have observed in Gondiya
district too.
strangely the inflorescence alwayz gets out of focus during
photography (has happened to me many times).

Hi All:

I'm a kindergarten student of botany...

Having grown up in the Dadar Parsi Colony and 5 gardens area in Mumbai, I have had daily access to  a veritable collection of trees- Kigelia Pinnata, Barringtonia acutangula, Swietenia Macrophylla and Mahogani, Tabebuia Megapotamica, Canon ball tree, Kleinhovia Hospita,  Diospyros Peregrina, Berrya Cordifolia, to name a few....

A few years ago a Parsi gentleman made a little field booklet which took you along the avenues of that area and identified the trees as you walked along the specified route. Some trees have
alas been lost since but  many are still around. What a great gift to the area!

It would be great if every  neighbourhood would mark their green territory and record its botanical history for posterity.

The purists may frown at the large number of exotic trees in our area but it is indeed the green heritage of the area just as colonial architecture is Mumbai's heritage....

Cheers,
Alpa
