Dear Dinesh ji,
I think പൂഞ്ഞാവ punnyaava as per Subrahmanya, Prasad K is correct.  I have heard പുണ്യാവ punnyaava with some miss matching, but accepted without noticing Subrahmanya's records. But പൂഞ്ഞാവ with a nice modification പൂഞ്ഞാവൽ punjaaval (പൂ poo/pu is flower and ഞാവൽ njaaval is Syzygium, a common name, is correct.  Hence I think the name is derived because of it's so many beautiful yellow panicle inflorescences.
Regards, Sam.
