This is a unique plant that has become a craze among western aquarium enthusiasts. It grows like a regular woody shrub in a marshy environment (your photograph is of emergent bush which is unremarkable) but when submerged the leaves take a remarkable darker color and the stems start  growing adhering to rocks and drift wood. This seems to be a unique survival adaptation of this species in the fast moving seasonal streams of Konkan region,  Maharashtra. Another peculiar feature is that most aquatic plants are herbs but this one is a shrub, with woody stems.
