Hello everybody,

Please help ID this plant that was growing on an Acacia tree near Alleppey, Kerala. It was a climber that had grown very tall and was hanging from the branches of the tree.

Regards
Nancy

Thank you, Mr. Kasaju.

Yes, it definitely looks like Asteraceae. But can anybody help with the species name? I checked a few of them, but Asteraceae family is too big to check flowers individually.

Warm regards
Nancy

Thank you Mr. Garg. The leaves and flowers definitely look like those of Melanthera biflora.

One problem I have is with the height of the plant. Most online sources say that they grow 1-2 meters tall. But this plant had climbed on an Acacia tree to a height of 4-5 meters with several thick stems hanging downwards. Can Melanthera biflora become that tall? It was not a sprawling habit, It looked like a climber.

Warm regards

Thank you very much, Mr. Garg.

I also found this reference which said that it can reach up to 6 meters by climbing on other plants for support, https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Melanthera+biflora. The plant I saw was definitely 5-6 meters tall.

Warm regards
