Dear All,

I would like to highlight below requirement of our applicable pre joining  medical standards, relating to BMI( Body Mass Index).
Now we will have more shortage of officers. Also it would be worth while to consider Lowest BMI allowed for sailing staff as equally a lean mariner too can be a risk in some  cases. eg :If most of them are lean on the ship and we need to stretcher lift any heavy person. Also on some general cargo ships where heavy  works are involved a lean mariner will be of little use except for light duties and we must try to raise his BMI by prescribing exercise and good food.

BMI = Weight in Kg / square of the height in m.

Obesity

Temporary unfit - if Body Mass (BMI) Index over 35 until reduced. Set target weight.

Unrestricted fitness:

a) if BMI between 30 and 35 and attributable solely to physique with broad shoulders/large muscle bulk with main muscles clearly defined and not obscured by subcutaneous fat. OR

(b) if capability and exercise test performance average or better, BMI steady and no co-morbidity.

Unrestricted fitness time limited –

(a) if BMI increasing or above 35, OR

(b) if capability or exercise test on borderline between average and poor; OR

(c) recommendations made at last examination not complied with, but able safely to perform essential duties AND no increased risk from co-morbidity

All seafarers with a BMI of greater than 35 must be declared temporarily unfit until their BMI is less than 35.

Those seafarers with BMI of 30-35, can be passed fit but for 1 year only (see Unrestricted fitness condition above). They should be advised of specific dietary and exercise methods to reduce weight with a goal to below 30 by their next PEME (within 1 year)

Dear paddy,
Good to see that things improving for seafaring.
Just think how you feel when you see a fatso police force.....same thing for the sea as well.
we need fit & active persons for the ships team. probably this will give some responsibility
to the seafarers to keep fit.
A little hard way........but for sure improve the working on board.

Brgds.
