Dear Colleagues,

With reference to the minutes of the last meeting of I-WRF held in IMD-Delhi, a science plan document for the I-WRF has to be written. The Head of each group is supposed to lead in writing the chapter on the subject assigned to that group by inviting contributions/ suggestions from the group members.

As NCMRWF is the group Lead on the "Model Improvement", I am writing this to invite your suggestions for work plan strategies. As you know, the members of this group are; (1) IITM (Dr. Mukhopadhyay), (2) NARL (Ms Jyoti Bhate), (3) IIT-Delhi, (5) IIT-Kharagpur (Dr. M. Mondal), (5) Cochin University (Dr. B. Chakrapani), (6) Calcutta University (Prof. Sutapa Choudhary), (7) Andhra University (Prof. Shivramkrishna), (8) SAC (Dr. Kistwal), (10) IMD (Dr. Y.V. Rama Rao, (11) SASE (Dr. Sudhansu), (12) SHAR (Dr. M. Rajasekhar), and (12) IAF.

As most of the group members have conducted a large number of experiments with WRF for studying different phenomena (viz., thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, monsoon systems, heavy rainfall events, cloudbursts, fog, etc.), it would be good to consolidate the best combinations of the physical parameterization schemes/ land surface data sets for the Indian region based on your experience. The idea is not repeat the same experiments which you have already conducted. Therefore, I would like to invite your comments on the following.

1. What is the best combination of the schemes for a given phenomena based on your studies/ experience?
2. What are the deficiencies in the present schemes based on your studies/ experience?
3. What is your suggestion on how to improve them based on your studies/ experience?

I shall appreciate if you kindly provide me a write up of about 8-10 pages including 3-4 diagrams by 15th April 2012, so that the same may be included in the science plan chapter of this group, and presented in the next meeting of the I-WRF which is supposed to be held by the end of April-2012.

I look forward to hearing from you and a surge of suggestions on this subject.

Best regards,

Dear Dr.Someshwar Das
It is a very good effort in bringing out I-WRF tuned to Indian
region . As we all aware, Indian region provides very good test bed
with varied geographical features having diagrammatic locations of
very heavy rain regions in the NE and West coast, desert on NW and
tapered land region towards south surrounded by oceans on three sides.
As you aware, HPC units have been installed in IMD and contribution
and utility of network of these HPC could be drawn into this effort
with necessary scientific plan and related capacity building to
meet the aim of the project.
with regards
balachandran

Dear Colleagues,

I invite your attention to my earlier mail of 27 March 2012 (copied below) regarding "IWRF Model Improvement". As I have not yet received any feedback from you so far, I am sending this gentle reminder for the same. I am repeating the main points as follows.

1. What is the best combination of the schemes for a given phenomena based on your studies/ experience?
2. What are the deficiencies in the present schemes based on your studies/ experience?
3. What is your suggestion on how to improve them based on your studies/ experience?

Your feedback is important for writing a science plan document for the I-WRF. I shall appreciate if you kindly provide me a write up of about 8-10 pages including 3-4 diagrams before we convene the next meeting. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Someshwar Das
