Seen in Jeypur Forest, Assam last week. The snake was two feet long.

They are Rat snakes (Ptyas mucosa)..

thank you, melvin. the right one's pattern certainly matches perfectly with the common rat snake but what about the snake on the left? Is there a difference in pattern of male and female rat snakes?

I am also attaching 2 close shots of the head as suggested by Humaid.

Rat Snakes for sure. Can conform from the black markings on the mouth.

Hi,

Right hand side rat snake is male and left side rat snake is female, based on size and tail pattern.
