With the new system in place now the grants are available only to
your children and not to you as the main applicant once you land in
Australia. One has to wait for two years of personal presence in
Australia to be eligible for any sort of Govt. assistance. But one
is eligible to get govt. assistance for their children from day one
and the details and amount of allowance can be obtained from the
commonwealth govt. website for this www.centrelink.gov.au. Believe
me friends you won't feel like taking govt. grants once you start
working. I must also say that the taxation system here is very good
in the sense that it makes everyone stand at the same place. Suppose
if one is earning very high then tax slabs go upto 50%, and If one
is earning too low then one gets different benefits to cover-up the
low income and to maintain a certain level of living e.g. if your
spouse is not earning you'll get an allowance for that in income tax
and it compensates a lot in this high tax rate country. Most of the
medical services which are available on Mediacre cards (for which
all the immigrants are eligible to) are free but some services like
Dental are not free and are very very costly and I'll advice you to
get your Dental check up done before landing here, as in Countries
like India this is not costly.
