The cabinet was supposed to take a series of decisions on the
privatisation of hydel projects but the day turned out to be
disappointing for some of the big-ticket companies keen to invest in
Himachal.
The cabinet quashed the bidding process for two key hydel projects -
Gharopa (99 mw) and Chamba (126 mw) following serious objections of the
locals opposing the schemes for environmental reasons.
The local residents in Kullu district, where the Gharopa project is
located on the Beas river, had claimed that diversion of the water
would adversely affect tourist activities like river rafting.
There were at least 16 bidders for the Gharopa project and prominent
among them included Piccadily Hotels of former Haryana minister Vinod
Sharma. The company has also applied for another project (Kut) in
Kinnaur district. One foreign company - Brakel Corporation of the
Netherlands - has also applied for the Gharopa project.
The cabinet also ordered the cancellation of the MoU for one project in
Chamba district for failure of the company to start work. Another
project, proposed in the Hamirpur district, was scrapped after not
having been found technically feasible.
