Aamir leads the Khans in tax payouts, Tendulkar’s outgo jumps 21% in 2010
BROKERS, diamond
merchants, top film stars and cricketers figure in the list of the top 100
non-corporate tax payers prepared by the Income-Tax department for fiscal
2009-10.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is the lone sportsman
in the list. However, all the three Khans of Bollywood — Aamir Khan, Shah
Rukh Khan and Salman Khan — apart from Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar
occupy a prominent place in the list, prepared annually by the Mumbai region of
the Income-tax department for administrative purposes.
“It’s an internal document that is used
mainly for monitoring these professionals and to compare their past returns for
convenience of tax officials,” said a department official, who did not
wish to be named.
This list is different from a similar document that lists top corporate tax
payers, that
is also used by the department for internal purposes. Mumbai region of the
department accounts for over 35-40% of the total taxes collected from all over
India.
Sachin Tendulkar paid a tax of 6.8 crore. According to
the statistics available with the Income-Tax department, this is 21% more than
the tax he paid in the last fiscal. In an indication of the fewer box office
hits, the list shows that most Bollywood actors paid less than the previous
year. For example, Akshay Kumar’s latest tax outgo is 18 crore, which is
41% lower than the tax he paid in the previous assessment year.
Even the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, paid
significantly less than last year; at 9.5 crore, his tax payment was 70% less than
the previous year. Reigning superstar Aamir Khan, who is in the limelight for a
series of successful movies, is the only actor who paid more than his previous
records. A tax outgo of 12.89 crore shows Aamir paid about 12% more than
previous year.
Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan saw a steep fall in
their tax payments. While Hrithik paid 6.5 crore, half of last year’s
payments, Salman Khan with 5.5-crore tax outgo, was paying 60% less.
Veteran investment banker Hemendra Kothari is another
prominent individual who made it to the list. Mr Kothari, who had paid over 87
crore in the previous fiscal year, paid only 5.6 crore last fiscal year.
The diamond trade appears to have thrived during the
fiscal year, judging by the tax payments by some of the merchants, which show a
marked increase over the previous year. They are: Dilipkumar Lekhi at 9.75
crore (up 147%), Vishinda Diamond at 13.3 crore (up 96%) Deepak & Co paid
14.25 crore (up 137%), Shree Ramkrishna Exports’ tax outgo stood at 14.25
crore (up 307%) and Ankit Gems at 5.85 crore (up 135%).
